DAMN feels like the album Kendrick’s career has been building to for years, and one that can only grow over time. Kendrick has become a master of taking the various sounds of different genres such as jazz, punk rock, 90s hip-hop and many more, and he layers them together in such unique ways that each of those genres begin to sound like he helped create them in the first place. Everything about the album works, and its highest peaks (the second half of “DNA,” “Fear” and the album’s closing 20 seconds) send it into the stratosphere musically. This is the main reason it doesn’t fully take the top spot, which if you asked me in two weeks it very well could. From commentary about Fox News’ use of his lyrics to demean black culture on “Yah” to describing the different developmental stages of his own fears in life on “Fear” (the album’s climax), DAMN is one dense-ass record that deserves time for us to sit with it a while longer. Every lyric he drops during the course of the 14 songs carries two tons in weight. Most of the album finds Kendrick at the most introverted, hopeless, doubtful, and cognizant he’s ever been in his career.

It looked like he was gearing up to release something, as he was scheduled to play quite a few. It’s been over three years since Kendrick released his last official studio album. Today I thought we would start with an artist we’re all wanting a new album from, Kendrick Lamar.
#RANKING KENDRICK LAMAR ALBUMS SERIES#
It is as layered, permeable, interesting and enjoyable as any rap album in recent memory. I’m starting a new series where I rank an artist’s discography and give little descriptions on each project. On the right day, you could convince me that DAMN, Kendrick’s fourth studio album, is actually his best. Best Tracks: “DNA,” “Feel,” “Lust,” “Fear” & “Duckworth”
